Wireless Internet for Laptop Computers --What Else Do I Need? Or Want?

wireless network card

You need wireless internet for laptop computers. Unless you just want to sit at your desk and word process, you won't be able to do what you want without it. A wireless notebook adapter is one thing we haven't mentioned that you need.

The advantage of laptop computers is their portability. You can take them to where you want to use them. If you plan to do this, you have two basic choices. A wireless network card or mobile broadband.

WIRELESS NOTEBOOK ADAPTER

Advantages:

  • Cheaper -- card built into most laptop computers, additional equipment less expensive, no additional service charge if you have an Internet Service Provider (ISP)
  • Faster -- more bandwith than mobile broadband
  • More reliable -- once you make a connection in one place you won't lose it

Disadvantages:

  • Less portability-- You must be within range of an access point to make a connection

MOBILE BROADBAND

Advantages:

  • More portable-- You can connect anywhere your Mobile Broadband Provider has cellular phone service

Disadvantages:

  • Slower-- Lower bandwith
  • More expensive service-- You will pay a monthly fee higher than you would pay for even for new high speed broadband access to an ISP. You will need to buy the card to access the service
  • Less reliable -- If you have ever dropped a call from your cellular phone, you can expect your computer to do the same
  • Single connection -- You would need a separate card and account for each computer you connect this way. Generally you can connect computers to a wireless router until the service starts to slow down because the band width is so divided. This is one to one.

  • Limited use -- Most plans limit the amount of data you can download with out being charged more, just like calls on a cellular phone. You will pay more for higher limits or unlimited service
Unless you plan to use your notebook computer only in places where there is good cell phone service from the mobile broadband provider you choose, I would suggest that a wireless network card is the best choice.

If you are a college student, your school will have secure wireless internet for laptop computers that any registered student will have permission to connect to. There may also be an unsecured network that visitors may access, but not get the "school" things like the professors or webinars. Most good hotels have a network for guests and even places like Service Areas on the New York State Thruway will give you access.

Most home networks aren't secured and I know people who have gone for years with out an ISP because they can pick up wireless internet for laptop computers from a neighbor's network.
