Toshiba Notebook Computers
Toshiba notebook computers come in all the standard varieties. There is a selection of standardized and configurable models available on the Toshiba Direct web site. The business models are the Tecra and the Satellite Pro. Toshiba indicates the Portege is a business model, but it is generally a high end ultra-portable. The rest of the "Families" listed there are "consumer" (home) models.
These consumer families that appear on the website are pretty much the same models that you see in retail outlets that sell Toshiba computers. There are some models where there is a limited amount of choice about what components you can get installed. They call these models "configurable". The families of consumer Toshiba notebook computers are - mini notebook computers-- There are only two models. Both are 10.1 inch screens. They are not configurable. The main differences between the two are faster memory, bigger hard drive, a security lock slot and recovery media in the model that is $80 more expensive.
- Qosmio-- These are the opposite end in size from mini notebooks. They have an 18.4 inch screen and feature Intel Core i5 or i7 processors and Nvidia discrete graphics. None of these models are configurable. The online prices range from $1199.99 to $1899.99. I've seen all these models advertised by traditional retailers with more price variability.
- Portege-- Toshiba calls these business computers, but they are very much what most computer companies sell as their upper-end ultra-portable laptops. The Portege comes in 12 and 13 inch models and a price from about $1000 to $3500. The processors range from core i3 to core i7 and upper end core 2 duo ultra low low voltage processors. None have discrete graphics. Some are tablet models. The configurable models only give you a choice of processor (limited), hard drive and amount of memory. Many models do have internal optical drives.
- Satellite-- The Satellite is the mainstream Toshiba laptop computer family. There are the full range of screen sizes, from 11 inch to 18.4 inch. There is a full line of processors available also. These range from single core AMD V processors to Intel core i7 quad core processors. Only Nvidia discrete graphics are available with the Intel processors. Prices are competitive with other brands and there is a wide choice of machines.
Toshiba offers a relatively high degree of customization in the configurable models of their computers that are offered on their website. It is similar to the more configurable models from Sony or the Dell or HP websites. These Toshiba models are more configurable than those available on the Acer (including Gateway and e-machines), Apple, Asus, Samsung, MSI, Fujitsu, or Lenovo websites. Check out the the Toshiba website and you will see notebook computers are available in a wide variety of configurations and are price competitive with other brands of computers.
