Sony Laptop Computers

Sony laptop computers are sold with displays from 8 to 17.3 inches. Intel processors are featured. Sony Viao laptop computers are sorted into series identified by letters.

The Series designate a screen size

  • The P Series has 8 inch displays. The two models are priced at $899.99 and $1499.99. Both models have solid state drives the more expensive model has a 256 GB drive, twice the size of the other model and the more expensive one also has a faster Atom processor, the Z550. Both have 2 GB of ram and high definition (1600X768) graphics. They weigh 1.3 pounds, but do not have internal optical drives.
  • The W Series is a 10.1 inch net book series. There are two models, but the only thing you get for the extra $50 is a custom case. The hardware is the same. The screen resolution is 1366X768, better than most net books but otherwise the hardware is pretty standard fare.
  • The X Series is an 11.1 inch net book, although Sony calls it "ultra-portable. It has standard net book graphics and processor, with built in mobile broadband and a 1366X768 resolution screen. Both models have solid state drives and 2 GB of ram. The prices of the two models are $1299.99 and $1599.99. They weigh in at under 3 pounds.
  • The Z Series has a 13.1 inch display. The prices range from $1919.99 to $4799.99. Intel core i5 and core i7 processors are available. All feature switchable graphics with the Intel HD graphics and a Nvidia GeForce GT 330M card. All have various size solid state drives from 64 GB to 512 GB. 4 GB of ram is on the lower priced models and they also have CD/DVD writers. The top end model has 8 GB ram, full HD and a Blu-ray burner. They weigh just over 3 pounds.
  • The Y Series has only one model available at this point. It sports an ultra low voltage i3 processor, with otherwise standard hardware-- 4 GB ram, 320 GB hard drive, integrated graphics and a 1366X768 13.3 inch display. The price is $769.99 and the weight is just under 4 pounds.
  • The EA Series is a 14 inch series. The EA, EB, and EC series are the mainstream Sony laptop computers. These are configurable. Core i3 and core i5 processors are available. Hard drive are 320 or 500 GB in either 5400 or 7200 RPM models. 4, 6, or 8 GB of ram are choices. An ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5470 GPU is available. CD/DVD or Blu-ray burners are available. Your hardware choices will run from $769.99 to $1529.98. You can buy an extended warranty or software and spend more.
  • The EB Series is the 15.5 inch series. You have the same choices as are available in the EA series. You pay a $50 less for the larger display. The price range is from $719.99 to $1479.98.
  • The EC Series is the 17.3 inch series. The only difference in your choices for the hardware in this series compared to the EA and EB is that the ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5470 GPU is standard and you can upgrade to a ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5650 GPU. The prices range from $819.99 to $1529.98.
  • The F Series is a 16.4 inch series which are the top end Sony laptop computers in many ways. This series features core i7 processors. 1920X1080 resolution screens are available. The Nvidia GeForce GT 330M is available. A 640 GB 5400 rpm hard drive and a 256 GB solid state drive is available. The price for your hardware choices ranges from $999.99 to $2259.99. You can spend more for software choices.

Sony offers a relatively high degree of customization in the configurable models of their computers that are offered on their website. It is similar to the more configurable models from Toshiba or the Dell or HP websites. These Sony models are more configurable than those available on the Acer (including Gateway and e-machines), Apple, Asus, Samsung, MSI, Fujitsu, or Lenovo websites.

Sony laptop computers generally get good reviews. They are expensive. The standard software bundle would cost you over $400 and that is reflected in the prices. I personally would be reluctant to pay the price they are asking for their laptop computers compared to equal hardware from other brands.
