Notebook Memory...More is Better

notebook memory

Add more notebook memory. Sounds simple, doesn't it? It is easy, but there are a few factors to consider.

Unless you get an Apple, you are going to have Windows 7 as your operating system. Manufacturers may charge to put the 64 bit version of this system on the computer.

In most laptops you have filled all the memory slots on the motherboard when you have installed 4 gigabytes of laptop computer memory. To install more ram, you will have to get modules with a higher per unit cost. 4 gigabytes should be more than enough for most users.

Notebook ram comes in different speeds. The bus speed of your motherboard determines what speed you can use. It can't be faster than the bus. You can mix memory speeds, but everything will function at the speed of the slowest memory.

Most laptop computers have DDR2 ram. Intel is pushing DDR3 memory. It is questionable whether the speed improvement is cost effective. That will probably change after the new platforms are implemented.

One of the few things you can do after you purchase your computer is get a laptop memory upgrade so you aren't locked into your original choice. You do have to check to be sure you have empty slots and not exceed the bus speed or the speed of the other modules.
