A Notebook Computer for Fred

Since Fred uses his notebook computer for his business, it is also a business expense, and should be at least partly deductible for US income taxes.

When Fred's on the road, the type of traveling he's doing might impact on what is best for him. If he is actually carrying the laptop a lot, he might want to buy a small laptop, an ultra-portable notebook. If he is bidding on construction or home improvements and using the laptop computer on these sites, he might want to consider what is called a rugged or ruggedized laptop. These will take the physical abuse they might get at a construction site much better than the laptop computers you will see in a big box electronics store.

If he is working at other companies' offices where he can expect wireless internet access he will be alright with a regular wireless card. If he needs to check things like material prices on site, Fred will also need mobile broadband access.

Regardless of whether he chooses an ultra-portable laptop, a ruggedized notebook, or a standard 15 inch laptop computer, I would suggest the best laptop for most people who need one, an entry level laptop.
