New Lenovo Laptops --June 2011
There are new Lenovo laptops available on the Lenovo website. They have announced an almost complete refresh of their lines to the newer processors. The Think Pad is still listed as a business line, so the Essential and Idea Pad continue to be their consumer lines.
The Essential line has been expanded and now features two series, the B Series and the G Series of new Lenovo laptops. The B Series is labeled as "budget laptops" by Lenovo and has models in two sizes, 14 inches and 15.6 inches. The B470 Series is the 14 inch series. There are two models, one that has a core i3 2310M processor and one with a core i5 2410M processor. Each has 4 GB RAM and a 500 GB hard drive. Both have DVD burners, bluetooth and a wireless b/g/n card. The i3 model has integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 and the i5 model a NVidia GeForce 410M graphics card. The prices are (sale/list) $589/$899 and $669/$999. The sale prices seem reasonable, the list prices high. The B570 Series is the 15.6 inch series. There are two models distinguished only by the processors, which are the same as the processors in the 14 inch models. The hardware is the same as the 14 inch models and both have Intel HD Graphics 3000. The prices are $589/$899 and $619/$999. The G Series has new Lenovo laptops in three sizes, 14 inches, 15.6 inches, and 17.3 inches. The G460 and G470 Series are 14 inches. The G460 is last years model with an Intel i5 480M processor. Like the B470 the G470 has either the core i3 2310M or core i5 2410M processor. There is a little more variety with the other hardware though. All have bluetooth and wireless b/g/n cards, but you can get 4, 6, or 8 GB of RAM and 500, 640, or 750 GB hard drives. Most have Intel HD Graphics 3000, but one model has an ATI Radeon 6370 graphics card and two models have bluray players. The prices range from $649/$799 to $999/$1149. The G570 Series is the Intel 15.6 inch series. The bottom of the series priced $499/$599 has a Pentium processor, 2 GB RAM, a 500 GB hard drive, Intel HD Graphics 3000, a DVD burner and a wireless b/g/n card. There is no bluetooth. This is priced $499/$599. The remainder of the Series has the same i3 2310M and i5 2410M processors as the other lines, with 4 or 8 GB RAM and a 500 or 750 GB hard drive. All have Intel HD Graphics 3000, bluetooth and a wireless b/g/n card. Two models have a bluray player. The prices range from $699/$849 to $899/$1149. The G575 Series is the AMD 15.6 inch series. There are two models both have AMD Fusion E350 Processors, ATI Mobility Radeon 6310 graphics, 4 GB RAM, DVD burners and wireless b/g/n cards. Neither has bluetooth. The only difference is one has a 500 GB hard drive and the other a 750 GB hard drive. The prices are $549/$649 and $599/$699. I am a bit surprised to see this slow a processor in new Lenovo laptops as big as 15.6 inches. The G770 Series is the 17.3 inch series. All three models have core i5 2410M processors, DVD burners, wireless b/g/n cards and bluetooth. You can get 4 or 8 GB RAM and a 500 or 750 GD hard drive. One model has an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6650M graphics card. The prices range from $749/$999 to $999/$1149. The Idea Pad still lists the the same series as it has in the past, but there are some changes. The U Series remains the older processors and is limited in the models available. It will probably be updated soon. The S Series contains the S10-3 net book and the S10-3t convertible tablet that are virtually unchanged. The S205 is an 11.6 inch model with an AMD Fusion E350 Processor and ATI Mobility Radeon 6310 graphics. You can get 3 or 4 GB of RAM and from 320 to 750 GB hard drive. The sale pricing is odd on this series. If you are interested, I suggest you look at the new Lenovo laptops on their website. The V Series is said to be a small business laptop. The V470 is the only series. These are 14 inch laptops. This is another case where I do not understand the logic behind the pricing and equipment in these new Lenovo laptops. The prices they show are from $599/$899 to $899/$1299. The processors are second generation core i3 to core i7 processors. There are discrete graphics available. Check the Lenovo website. It looks to me that the faster processors have the slower graphics but could be cheaper. The Y Series is the primary full sized series of new Lenovo laptops. There are 14 and 15.6 inch models. The 14 inch models are the Y460p and Y470 lines. Both lines offer Intel second generation i3 to i7 processors, 4 to 8 GB. of RAM, bluetooth, wireless b/g/n cards, 500 or 750 GB and a DVD or bluray drive. The difference between the two lines is the Y460p has the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6550M graphics card and the Y470 has the NVidia GeForce GT 550M graphics card. The NVidia card is considered to have somewhat better game performance but both are considered able to play games at reasonable settings. The prices for the Y460p range from $899/$999 to $1199/$1549: for the Y470 from $769/$1049 to $1099/$1549. The 15.6 inch models come in four lines. The Y560 and Y560d are first generation core i models left over from last year. The Y560p and Y570 are parallel to the Y460p and Y470. They feature slightly better graphics cards, though. the Y560p has an AMD Radeon HD 6570 graphics card and is priced from $899/$999 to $1149/$499. The Y570 features the NVidia GeForce GT 555M graphics card and is priced $799/$1049 to $1249/$1599. This NVidia card is also considered somewhat better than the Radeon card. The last series of new Lenovo laptops is the Z Series. The Z360 and Z560 are last years 13.3 and 15.6 inch models. The Z370 is the new 13.3 inch line featuring second generation core i3 and i5 processors. The standard hardware is 4 GB RAM, bluetooth, a wireless b/g/n card, a DVD burner, a 500 GB hard drive and Intel HD Graphics 3000. A top end model has 6 GB RAM, a 750 GB hard drive and a slightly better NVidia GeForce 410M graphics card. The prices range from $699/$899 to $899/$1149. The Z470 is the 14 inch line. It has a core i5 2410M processor Intel HD Graphics, 8 GB RAM, bluetooth, a wireless b/g/n card, a DVD burner, and a 750 GB hard drive. It is priced $849/$1099. For $899/$1099 you can get black rather than blue. For $899/$1199 you can get a bluray player. The Z570 is the 15.6 inch line. Processors range from the second generation Intel i3 to i7. RAM ranges from 4 to 8 GB. Hard drives range from 320 to 750 GB. All models have Intel HD Graphics 3000 and a wireless b/g/n card. On some models you have bluetooth. There is a possibility of getting a bluray player, rather than a DVD burner. Some models are black, others are grey. The prices range from $649/$899 to $999/$1049. The sale prices listed for the new Lenovo laptops are fairly reasonable, but the list prices seem a bit high. I would wait for another sale before I bought a Lenovo notebook if I missed this sale.
