New Dell Laptops

New Dell laptops have gone on sale at the Dell web-site. The changes to the products offered are very interesting. As we have said before, the "Studio" and "Adamo" lines have disappeared. There are some other interesting changes also.

Although new Dell laptops with AMD processors and Intel Celeron and Dual Core Pentium processors are available in retail establishments, there are none shown on the Dell website.

What is available are two newly refreshed lines and two lines which are basically still last years models.

The first of the older model lines is the Inspiron R. These are available with 15 inch screens and seem to be overstock. Prices range from about $450 to about $650 and are in the range you will pay for similar machines from other makers. They have Intel Core i3 380M processors (Intel HD Graphics).

Surprisingly, the other older model line is the Alienware gaming laptops. These are in 11 inch 15 inch and 17 inch models.

The Alienware M11x is advertised as the "most powerful 11 inch gaming laptop in the universe." They are probably right, I don't think anyone else pretends to make an 11 inch gaming laptop. The prices range from about $600 to over $1000. The fastest processor is slower than any second generation core i processor and the graphics card is the slowest discrete graphics card Dell offers in any of its models.

The Alienware M15x prices range from about $1200 to over $2000. Processors range from core i3 (2010) to core i7 (2010). The graphics card is only marginally faster than the one in the M11x. Clearly still last years gaming laptops.

The Alienware M17x is more up to date. The processors are second generation core i7 processors and the graphics card is a top end card. 3D displays are available. The prices range from about $1500 to over $3000.

The New! Inspiron R is a refreshed line of Dell laptops. They come in the 14R, 15R and 17R. As you probably guessed these are 14, 15 and 17 inch screen models.

The 14R has second generation core i3 or i5 processors and offers a low mid-range to mid-range graphics card good enough to play most games, but not at high settings. The prices range from about $600 to about $900.

The 15R also has second generation core i3 or i5 processors and offers a low mid-range to mid-range graphics card good enough to play most games, but not at high settings. The prices range from about $550 to about $850.

The 17R have the same processors available as the 14R and 15R. A slightly faster low mid-range to mid-range graphics card is available. Prices range from about $600 to about $900.

The other new Dell laptops are the XPS line. XPS laptops come in 15inch, 17 inch and 17 inch 3D models.

The XPS 15 prices start at about $800 for a machine with a core i5 second generation processor and a low mid-range graphics card and for about $1750 you can max out the available hardware with more RAM, a near-top core i7 second generation processor (second best) and a mid-range graphics card.

The XPS 17 with the same core 15 processor and a graphics card better than any available in the XPS 15 starts at about $900. You can max out the available hardware at about $1625. You get a somewhat faster computer than the XPS 15 for a little less, but it is bigger and heavier.

The 17 inch 3D models are listed separately at one point, but show up in the real sales area as part of the XPS 17 set. The prices start at about $1200 and include one set of 3D glasses. A $40 dollar upgrade gives you the equivalent of the $900 17 inch laptop without 3D. The equivalent of the non-3D XPS 17 is a little under $2100. Additional pairs of 3D glasses are $100 each.

You can spend more for any of these Dell laptops if you select more expensive warranty or software options.

Dell seems to think that the big new thing in their updated 15 inch laptop lines is the availability of switchable lids. For $35 you can get a different color lid that will clip on over the standard black they sell There are designs available for $60.

The new Dell laptops are only distinguished from the competition by the switchable lids. Other than that, they feature about the same hardware at about the same price. The bottom and top are missing though.
