Your Laptop Screen --The Visual Heart of Your Laptop

Your laptop screen is in many ways the heart of your laptop computer. If you don't like what you see, it is hard to be satisfied with your laptop.
Laptop displays come in two basic flavors, a 4:3 aspect ratio and a 16:9 ratio. Anything labeled wide-screen should have the 16:9 aspect ratio. The 4:3 ratio is becoming increasingly rare. All of the recognized formats for high definition television have the 16:9 ratio. Here is a table of somewhat standard display formats.| Format | Resolution WxH | | VGA | 640x480 | | SVGA | 800x600 | | XGA | 1024x768 | | XGA+ | 1152x864 | | SXGA | 1280x1024 | | SXGA+ | 1400x1050 | | UXGA | 1600x1200 | | WVGA | 800x480 | | WSVGA | 1024x600 | | WXGA | 1280x800 or 1366x768 | | WXGA+ | 1440x900 | | WSXGA | 1440x900 | | WSXGA+ | 1680x1050 | | WUXGA | 1920x1200 |
The W in the acronyms stand for widescreen. The VGA, WVGA, SVGA and WSVGA formats are rarely seen on full size laptops today. You will see WSVGA displays on net books and ultra-portables (13 inch and smaller displays). There are two resolutions shown for WXGA. Because of the manufacturing process, high definition (720p) LCD televisions are manufactured with the 1366x768 resolution. WXGA is the standard for 720p high definition television. WUXGA is the standard for 1080p high definition television. WXGA+ and WSXGA are different names for the same resolution. Most recently manufactured laptops come with a WXGA display. I would not buy a laptop with resolution worse than WXGA. You will get full high definition then. Standard DVDs should display adequately on any of the widescreen displays. WUXGA is needed for the highest resolution from a bluray disk. It is also prefered by gamers.
