hp dv6 6121tx or dell xps 15 2nd gen i7 which is best?

What is the difference between Intel 2nd generation i5 & i7 processors. Which is good for a normal multimedia use and 1 hour of gaming on an average?

ANSWER

The Intel second generation core i7 processors are generally faster than the core i5 processors for straight computational tasks. when looking at them though remember a 2xx7 or 2xx9 number indicates a low power model. A full power core i5 processor is almost certainly faster than a low power core i7 processor.

However, you say you will primarily using the computer for normal multimedia and some gaming. For this type of use neither of the i5 or i7 cores should slow down the computer. The bottleneck will be the graphics processor. Both Intel second generation core i5 and core i7 processors are linked with the Intel HD Graphics 3000 video accelerator. If there is no discrete graphics card in the system this will put the limits on your ability to play games. Some newer graphics intensive games will not be playable with the integrated graphics card. The Notebookcheck website should give you a feeling for whether you can play your favorite games with either of these sets of processors. Just about any discrete graphics card any good laptop maker will team with an i5 processor will play these games.

If you do need a discrete graphics card to play your favorite games, I would think about a laptop with one of the new AMD Llano Accelerated Processing Units. While Intel second generation core i5 or core i7 processors are quite a bit faster in straight computations, for most graphics applications that can't use Intel’s Quick Sync technology the Llano A8 processors are faster and the on board video processors in even the A4 chips are good enough to run the games the Intel HD Graphics 3000 fails on.

To get back to the specific computers you asked about, the HP dv6-6121TX has a faster video card than what is available in the Dell XPS. The i7 processor is fast also, but the Dell can match it. The lower level entry level Dell at $799.99 (US) is considerably less expensive than the Hewlitt-Packard model if my currency converter is correct (About $465 US less). As you could probably tell from the information above, the entry level Dell model is more than sufficient for the use described and is the model I would choose.
