Laptop Motherboards

Laptop motherboards are the main circuit boards of notebook computers. Everything else is connected to them.

They control the speed of a laptop computer in many ways.

  • The bus speed sets a maximum that data can be transferred between components.
  • The CPU socket limits what mobile processors can be installed in the computer.
  • The memory slots limit the amount of memory that can be installed.
  • The bus, chip set and bios control what type and speed of memory can be used.

You would think that since the motherboard controls and limits so many things about your notebook that your choice of notebook motherboard is one of the more important choices you make when you choose your laptop computer.

Bad news.

Basically, you have no choice. If you're buying a computer on-line from a manufacturer like Dell or HP, its almost impossible to find out which notebook motherboards are in notebook computers. My experience has been that if you are lucky enough to find a replacement notebook motherboard available, the part number won't match anything the motherboard manufacturer claims to make, and the specifications they show you are less detailed.

Generally it appears that the way you get better notebook motherboards is by moving to a more expensive product line. You can see better components available and a faster bus speed.

About 75% of motherboards are made be five manufacturers. They compete on the top end by trying to make the fastest boards. The motherboards most people buy are all about the same.

One of the reasons you hear that you can't upgrade a lot of the components in a laptop is because the laptop motherboard won't support the upgrades. It isn't all scrimping on the part of the manufacturers. The lower end notebook motherboards tend to use less power and generate less heat, important considerations in your laptop computer.

Many of these notebook motherboards only support integrated graphics and sound. Don't plan on using the laptop for high end games if this is what you get.
