Factory Refurbished Laptops

Factory refurbished laptops is a term you see these days. People are being told to buy refurbished laptops or there are refurbished laptops for sale. They often claim that these computers are as good as new laptops and that you can save large amounts of money by buying them.

I have nothing against refurbished electronics. I don't like to see people getting lied to though. When I bought my refurbished DVR, I knew it had a guarantee from the original manufacturer. After the extension the credit card card company gave it was as long as you would get with a new one. At the time it was significantly less expensive than a new one. It didn't have all the bells and whistles a new one might have had-- It wasn't as good as a new one. For my usage, it was good enough though.

Many of the people writing articles will try to tell you you will save a lot of money and get a computer that is just as good as a new one. Both of these things are possible, but probably not at the same time. People talk about refurbished laptops or certified refurbished laptops and try to convince you that these are really meaningful words. If I refurbish laptops in my garage it's a laptop refurbishing factory. If my wife certifies I did a particular laptop it is a certified factory refurbished laptop. Doesn't mean much, does it?

The best refurbished laptops for sale are at manufacturers websites. These often have the manufacturers full warranty and extended warranties available at the same price as on a new computer. You won't save much on these though. 10 to 15 percent is about all you will save on these. Be careful though, even some refurbished laptops at these sites have parts with known defects and you are rolling the dice if you buy them.

Another reasonable place to buy factory refurbished laptops is from the large on-line retailers such as Comp USA or Newegg if they have them. The FTC says I have to tell you that if you use either of these links and buy something I might get a commission. The sellers are reputable and at least you will get the 30 or 90 day guarantee they list with it. The source of these computers are generally large companies where we can at least hope they have better quality control than Ed's garage. Many are off lease however and although they might do the job you want them for, they aren't the newest hardware. You will generally save money when compared to a new laptop however.

Factory refurbished laptops really aren't the bargains some people make them out to be, and you have to be very careful to get your money's worth when buying one.
