Buying cheap factory refurbished laptops should get you a refurbished laptop about as fast as a three year old mid-level desktop computer if you can find one of these laptop computers on sale.
That is actually plenty fast enough for almost everything most people who aren't gamers want to do with a laptop. You should know, my seven year old desktop is faster than any of the net-books or mini-laptops out there. A refurbished laptop for sale should be a full sized laptop considerably faster than that desktop.

Any processor faster than an Intel Pentium M 740 (1.73 GHz.) should do. That would include any Pentium Dual Core, Core Duo, Core 2 Duo or Celeron 500 or higher processor.

On the AMD side, the Athlon QL and Turion TL or RM processors are better than most of the Intel processors you will see in the bottom price range.

Refurbished laptops can also be found at the "outlet" parts of the big sellers (makers) websites. None of these laptops were ever anything I would have configured for myself. I think I have seen all the computers there for less before they hit the outlet section. Any price they show as "was" is usually close to the most expensive the laptop ever was. In the course of a month the price on a laptop at one of these websites will vary more than the 10% you'll generally save. They just want you to think that they have 'cheap' factory refurbished laptops there.
