Best Gaming Notebook
The best gaming notebook is slower than a gaming desktop. It should have the fastest graphics card you can get and a top processor. The best line I've seen about gaming computers recently was on a site reviewing gaming laptop computers. While I didn't agree with their choice of the best gaming notebook out of the computers they were recommending, I did agree when they said that no matter what you bought today, it would be too slow next year. They were almost right. If you are a hardcore gamer, its already to slow.
Right now, Intel has introduced new lines of processors, Core i7 and Core i5. Core i7 processors have been made for desktops for some time and they are the fastest processors available. Some computer makers have built gaming laptops using these processors. I read an article comparing the performance of a laptop with one of these processor to a small form factor "portable" desktop. The systems were matched fairly closely -- within about one percent, except for the video card. The cards were the top end GeForce GTX 280M and its namesake desktop GeForce GTX 280. The test was set up as a comparison of the graphics cards. The bottom line of the results was that the mobile card was a little better than half the speed of the desktop card. This was a fairly hard core site. They considered Crysis or Far Cry 2 unplayable at anything other than the lowest settings. Even there the mobile solution was running slower than the desktop card was at the highest settings. The newest and fastest ATI graphics card don't even have a slower namesake available for laptops yet. The same effect can be seen with processors. While the names aren't necessarily the same, even the fastest laptop processors are slower than the fastest desktop processors. The fastest Core 2 mobile processors were the equivalent of low midlevel desktop processors. The new mobile Core i7 are slower than a lot of the quad processors currently available in desktops (Core 2). The Core i7 processors available for desktops are faster till. If you are going to game against a group who spent the same amount of money on a desktop with a laptop gaming computer your going to be a bleeding lamb in a tank full of piranhas. At least three computer makers claim to have the fastest gaming laptop either ever, or with a particular screen size. From what I have seen announced, the only true candidates are customized models built on the Clevo 15.6 or 17 inch from a custom builder like Sager or Falcon Northwest. These and the new Alienware 17 inch model seem to be the only ones with the Nvidia Geforce GTX 280M video card which is still fastest. I'm not sure who actually builds the Alienware. The real fastest gaming laptop is still probably the models built on the Clevo chasis with a desktop Core i7 and the 280M. There are probably more, but the only one of these I can name is the AVADirect Clevo D900F Core i7. All of these are well over $2500 decently configured, and even the one with the desktop processor is running the way slower mobile graphics card. Unless someone drops a desktop graphics card into a laptop they will always be way slower for gaming than even moderate desktops. They weigh 12 to 15 pounds too.
