The Best Laptop Prices are for Low Entry Level Laptop Computers

The best laptop prices are on what I call low entry level laptops. You'll get the best laptop deal that isn't quite up to standards.


If you are trying to impress somebody, these aren't the machines for you, but they do have the best laptop prices. The cheapest laptop you should even think seriously about buying has to meet some standards, though. All these cheap laptop computers are faster than the desktop I'm working on now.

No matter what cheap notebook you buy, make sure it meets these minimums.

You’re mostly likely to get a decent machine with a 15 inch computers. We'll mention them first.

• Display--Make sure the screen resolution is 1280x800 or higher though, anything lower isn't true high definition.
• Memory--Microsoft recommends 2GB or more for Vista. While they don't make the same recomendtion for Windows 7, I would try to get 3GB as a minimum. You will almost certainly be sharing memory with the graphics card. If you have 3 GB you shouldn't have much of a problem with memory. 4 GB would be my choice.
• Hard drive--a 160 GB. hard drive should do. This is upgradable.
• Video Card--You almost certainly will have intergrated graphics, sharing the system memory. Any Intel graphics accelerator or Nvidia or ATI card will do.
• Sound Card--Integrated sound is fine. 2.1 capable or better is good, but almost everything is that or better.
• Internet Connection--At least a wireless g card. You can buy one you can plug into the cheap laptop if you need to. It will cost you $50 or so.
• OpticalDrive-- you want a DVD burner. Almost everything will have one. Don't think external -- they're really a pain.
• Processor--Intel

  The faster machines will have older Core i or Pentium Dual Core processors. The dual core Celeron processors are ok. We'll talk about the other processors you will see in the next section.

  AMD

  Any AMD Athlon II or Turion II processor labeled with a P will do the job. You might see A6 processors in the same price range. Jump on them if you see them. They are faster than new core i3 processors with better graphics. AMD owns one of the big 2 video card makers so ATI integrated graphics are likely in the Athlon or Turion processors.

These are all faster than the desktop I usually work on.

You will also find a group of smaller screened low entry level laptops. Some of these are stretched out net books. The hardware inside is the same as any other net book-- the display is just bigger. These have the Atom processors, AMD V, C, E or neo processors. The E series is the best of this lot. I haven't seen AMD A4 processors here yet but they should be the best of the lot when they show. What you do find are processors that are at best about the equivalent of a five year old desktop. The smaller computers will not have optical drives (CD or DVD burners).

The AMD E processors are reasonable. The other AMD processors in these machines that have the best laptop prices are killer slow like the Intel single core processors.
